Vimicro To Develop 3G Cellphone with Bird
SinoCast Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) BEIJING, Jun 22, 2006 (SinoCast via COMTEX) –Vimicro Corporation, a leading fabless semiconductor company in China, recently declared that it will jointly develop 3G multimedia terminals with the leading cellphone manufacturer Ningbo Bird Co., Ltd. (Bird).
The partnership includes development of high- and medium-end 3G cellphones, and notably it is the first time for China to apply its self-developed multimedia chip into 3G cellphone.
The research and development of multimedia chip is undertaken by Vimicro and the development of 3G cellphone is undertaken by Bird.
The project involves totally CNY 60 million, CNY 40 million for the research and development of multimedia chip and CNY 20 million for 3G cellphone.
The project is designed to achieve a production and sales capacity of 2 million multimedia chips that are in compliance with the 3G standard. Moreover, it also aims to grab 20% of the domestic market in 3 years.
In recent years, homemade cellphone gradually lost its ground in the competition against foreign brands with unmatchable edges on core technologies, especially the core chip and basic software.
The collaboration of two companies may ease the sluggishness of domestic cellphone in this sector.
